Here the joists run right to left so the hardwood flooring itself must be installed up and down, across the joists. This adds stability and reinforces the whole flooring system itself. Solid flooring is normally nailed down or stapled down and must be installed over an approved substrate. Some approved substrates are: plywood and OSB.
